Step Into the World of “Kokuho” at the Izushi Eirakukan, the Film’s Historic Location
A special exhibition celebrating the critically acclaimed film “Kokuho” is now open at the Izushi Eirakukan in Toyooka City, Hyogo Prefecture, a key filming location for the movie. This historic theater, where stars Ryo Yoshizawa and others began filming, has become a must-visit “sacred site” for fans, offering a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of the film.
Izushi Eirakukan: The Oldest Playhouse in the Kinki Region and a “Kokuho” Filming Location
Opened in 1901, the Izushi Eirakukan is the oldest surviving traditional playhouse in the Kinki region of Japan. Its immense historical value and authentic atmosphere made it the perfect setting for “Kokuho.”
The film is based on the novel of the same name by Shuichi Yoshida, which tells the dramatic story of Kikuo, a man born into a yakuza family who dedicates his life to the world of Kabuki. “Kokuho” has already garnered international attention, having been selected for the prestigious Directors’ Fortnight section at the 78th Cannes Film Festival.
At the Japan premiere on May 30, 2025, lead actor Ryo Yoshizawa and co-star Ryusei Yokohama revealed that the first day of shooting took place at the Izushi Eirakukan, cementing its special status among the film’s admirers.
Recreating the Film’s Atmosphere: Highlights of the Special Prop Exhibition
The ongoing special exhibition transforms the Izushi Eirakukan into the world of “Kokuho.” The exterior of the building is adorned with vibrant banners, just as seen in the movie, welcoming visitors into the story.
Inside the theater, guests can view a stunning collection of items up close, including the ornate lanterns that illuminated the playhouse scenes, invaluable props actually used during production, and autographs from the cast. This exhibition presents a rare chance to relive the emotion and excitement of the film within the very walls of the historic theater where it was brought to life.
