About The Rose of Versailles Anime Film

The film is based on the landmark shojo manga The Rose of Versailles, a masterpiece by Riyoko Ikeda. First serialized in the weekly magazine Margaret starting in 1972, the series has sold over 20 million copies. Set against the backdrop of the French Revolution, it dramatically portrays the intertwined lives and loves of Oscar François de Jarjayes, a woman raised as a man to command the Royal Guard, and Queen Marie Antoinette.

The manga has become a social phenomenon in Japan, inspiring numerous adaptations, including a highly successful stage musical by the Takarazuka Revue and a classic TV anime series. Now, more than 50 years after its debut, the story has been brought back to the big screen as a completely new animated feature film.

The film is directed by Ai Yoshimura (Blue Spring Ride) with a screenplay by Tomoko Konparu (Kimi ni Todoke – From Me to You). The character designs were handled by Mariko Oka (Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan), breathing new life into the iconic figures.

The score is helmed by music producer Hiroyuki Sawano (Attack on Titan), with music composed by KOHTA YAMAMOTO, who also worked on Attack on Titan and the NHK drama Ōoku: The Inner Chambers. The world-class animation was produced by MAPPA, the globally acclaimed studio behind hits like Jujutsu Kaisen and In This Corner of the World.

The star-studded voice cast features Miyuki Sawashiro as Oscar François de Jarjayes and Aya Hirano as Marie Antoinette. They are joined by Toshiyuki Toyonaga as Oscar’s childhood friend André Grandier, and Kazuki Kato as Hans Axel von Fersen, Marie Antoinette’s lover.

The film’s theme song, “Versailles,” is a new track written and performed by singer-songwriter Ayaka, whose powerful vocals and sweeping melody perfectly capture the epic scope of the story. Additionally, the narration is provided by acclaimed actress Hitomi Kuroki.

The Rose of Versailles film is now streaming on Netflix.
