Kissing Scenes and a “Vulgar Gesture” Among Cut Footage
According to reports, three primary scenes were targeted by the CBFC’s cuts. Two kissing scenes between Superman, played by David Corenswet, and Lois Lane, portrayed by Rachel Brosnahan, were removed. Additionally, an eight-second scene in which Guy Gardner, one of the Green Lanterns played by Nathan Fillion, uses his power ring to form a middle finger during a battle sequence was also cut for containing a “vulgar gesture.”
Film Achieves No. 1 Box Office Rank Despite Censorship
Despite the censorship, Superman is experiencing remarkable success at the Indian box office. Warner Bros. India announced that the film secured the highest opening weekend gross for any DC film in the country’s history, debuting at number one. The film is currently screening in English as well as in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu language versions.
Film Censorship in India and Fan Reaction
This is not the first instance of a major international film facing censorship in India. Recently, in Apple Original Films’ F1, a scene where Brad Pitt’s character sends a middle finger emoji was voluntarily replaced by the studio with a fist bump emoji before submission to the CBFC.
The censorship of Superman, particularly the removal of the kissing scenes, has been met with disappointment among DCU fans in India. The on-screen chemistry between David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan had been a significant topic of discussion during the promotional tour, building high anticipation for their romantic moments. Fans have taken to social media to express their frustration over being denied the opportunity to see these anticipated scenes.
