Tom Holland Reveals ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ to Embrace “Old School” Filmmaking With Real-World Locations

Actor Tom Holland has shared new details on the upcoming Marvel Studios film, Spider-Man: Brand New Day. In a notable shift from its predecessor, Spider-Man: No Way Home, which relied heavily on soundstages due to pandemic-era restrictions, the new installment will return to “old school filmmaking” by prioritizing practical, on-location shooting.

Back to the Roots: “Old School” Filmmaking and Real Locations

Speaking in an interview at a padel tournament he was hosting, Tom Holland expressed his excitement about returning to the iconic role. “Obviously, I’m over the moon, I’m so excited,” he stated.

Comparing the experience to reuniting with a close friend, Holland reflected on the production of the last film. “We were really restricted with what we could do in the last movie because of COVID. We shot the entire film on stages,” he explained. He then detailed the new approach for the upcoming sequel: “Now, we’re really gonna lean into that old-school filmmaking and shoot in real locations, which is why we’re starting in Glasgow. We are gonna use the streets of Glasgow for this massive set piece that we are putting together.”

This method evokes a sense of nostalgia for the star, bringing him back to his first solo outing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. “It’s gonna feel like making [Spider-Man: Homecoming] again,” Holland added. “It’s been such a long time since I’ve done it, it’s gonna feel like a breath of fresh air. I think the fans are gonna be over the moon with what we’re putting together.”

A “Fresh Start” for the Story

This new production philosophy aligns with previous comments Holland made at CinemaCon, where he teased that the film would be “a fresh start.”

“I know that we left you with a massive cliffhanger at the end of No Way Home,” he said, referencing the moment Peter Parker sacrifices his identity to save the people he loves most. “So, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is a fresh start. It will be exactly what it sounds like. That’s all I can tell you.” Holland has remained guarded, carefully avoiding any potential spoilers about the narrative.

New Director, All-Star Cast, and Past Success

Tom Holland’s tenure as Spider-Man has been a critical and commercial juggernaut. The first three films all achieved massive global success: 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming earned $$880 million, 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home grossed $$1.13 billion, and 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home reached a staggering $$1.9 billion worldwide.

While the original trilogy was helmed by director Jon Watts, Spider-Man: Brand New Day will see Destin Daniel Cretton, known for his work on Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, take the director’s chair.

Plot details remain under wraps, but the cast is expanding with intriguing additions. Jon Bernthal is set to reprise his role as The Punisher, and Stranger Things star Sadie Sink will make her Marvel debut in an undisclosed role. The return of franchise mainstays Zendaya (MJ) and Jacob Batalon (Ned) is also widely expected.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is scheduled to be released in U.S. theaters by Disney and Marvel Studios on July 31, 2026.
