“Demon Slayer” Latest Film Smashes Box Office Records in Japan, Estimated $39.7 Million in Three Days, Reports Deadline

The global entertainment industry publication, Deadline, in its weekend worldwide box office report, not only detailed the performance of major Hollywood blockbusters but also highlighted the record-breaking opening of the latest “Demon Slayer” film, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Castle Arc, in Japan.

Demon Slayer: Mugen Castle Arc Achieves Phenomenal Opening in Japan

The highly anticipated latest installment in the “Demon Slayer” series, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Castle Arc, released in Japan on Friday, July 18th, has already become a massive hit in the Japanese market. It is reported to have generated an astonishing estimated 5.9 billion yen (approximately $39.7 million USD) in its first three days (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday). With Monday being a public holiday, forming a four-day weekend, the figures are likely to increase further once the final results are tallied.

Furthermore, the film has set a new all-time opening record for IMAX in Japan. On its opening day alone, Friday, it grossed $3 million, surpassing all previous IMAX opening records, regardless of whether they were Hollywood or Japanese productions. The total IMAX gross for the four-day period is estimated to reach $3.5 million.

Hollywood Blockbusters Maintain Strong Performance

Alongside the impressive run of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Castle Arc, Deadline’s report also provided detailed worldwide box office figures for major Hollywood productions.

“Superman”: In its second weekend, the film crossed the $400 million mark globally, reaching a cumulative $406.8 million. While maintaining strong performance in some markets, it reportedly struggled in the Chinese market.

“Jurassic World Rebirth”: After its third weekend, the film surpassed $600 million worldwide, reaching a cumulative $648 million. It currently ranks as the fourth highest-grossing Hollywood film globally for 2025. In China, it has already set the record for the highest-grossing Hollywood film of 2025, with a cumulative $71.8 million.

“F1”: The film continues to perform strongly, driven by positive word-of-mouth worldwide. It boasts a high retention rate of only a 24% drop in international markets, reaching a cumulative $307.2 million overseas and $460.8 million worldwide. It is on track to surpass $500 million. In the Korean market, despite a struggling market, the film saw an unusual 28% increase in weekend box office.

It’s noteworthy, as reported, that some of these Hollywood blockbusters have strategically scheduled their Japan release dates later to avoid direct competition with Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Castle Arc. Jurassic World Rebirth is set to release on August 8th, and How to Train Your Dragon on September 5th in Japan.

New Releases and Future Outlook

The new animated film Smurfs grossed $33.6 million worldwide, falling short of initial expectations. This is attributed to a crowded market and European weather potentially impacting family film attendance. The latest installment of Last Summer earned $11.6 million across 58 international markets, but the same level of nostalgia seen in the U.S. does not appear to translate overseas.

Deadline states that it will continue to update its information as more precise figures for Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Castle Arc become available. Sony Pictures is slated to distribute the film in North America i

n September.
